PROTESTS: As Osun State Govt Permits Hijab Covering In A Christian School

I don’t know how else to describe this situation, but I find it absolutely hilarious. Students of Baptist High school, Iwo in Osun State have taken matters into their own hand, protesting against the new law that allows Muslim students to wear Hijab to school. Students of other religions also came dressed in apparels depicting their respective religions including the traditionalists who came as Masquerades.

Vanguard reports:

For two days running, tension continues to mount in Iwo, Osun state as situation at yesterday took a new dimension when some students of the school mobilized masquerades to the school . The students of the school, it was gathered also appeared in masquerade attire and prevented academic activities in the school for several hours. The masquerades, it was gathered were mobilized to the school by some students with the collaboration of some traditionalists in the town as various religious organizations have taken interest in the crisis rocking the education sector in he state. The state government last year introduced same uniform for all the secondary school students in the state and also legalized the use of veil (hijab) in public schools.

The Christian Community, especially the Osun Baptist Conference protested against the decision then but the protest was ineffective as the government failed to reverse the policy. Pockets of crises had been recorded at the Baptist High School, Iwo over the use of veil (hijab) by female Muslim students.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Osun state Chapter, Rev Elisha Ogundiya said the Christians were not responsible for the crisis in the school.

“We are not responsible for the crisis in the school. The students are just expressing their rights. If Muslim children are allowed to wear Hijab to school, I don’t see any reason why Christian children cannot wear their choir robes to school or children of those practicing traditional religion dressed in their regalia. We warned them against this before now. Why Hijab in schools? We saw it coming and we warned the government against it, but they refused to listen. All the pupils are free to dress the way they like to school. It is their right”.
