Residents Watch As Day-Old Baby Dumped By Roadside Suffocates to Death

A woman, who is believed to be mentally unstable, reportedly dumped a new-born baby by the roadside in the Abule Egba area of Lagos on Wednesday, January 28.

Punch reports the woman, said to be dark in complexion, was always reportedly roaming the area which is near a filling station. It was gathered that the baby was wrapped in a black sack, neatly clothed and covered with a plaster on the mouth.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, a trader, Mrs. Atanda Kuforiji, said they were taken aback by the sight of the abandoned baby. She added that a resident of the area drew the attention of other residents to the presence of the baby dumped by the roadside.

She explained that everybody went to the scene to see why the resident was shouting, only to be confronted by the sight of the new baby.

She said, “The baby was wrapped in a sack and placed by the roadside. I saw a crowd gather and decided to have a look; the child was still alive. People took pictures of the baby. His mouth was covered with a plaster to prevent him crying out. Everybody was saying what came into their heads, but nobody offered to help the baby.”

It was learnt that many of the dwellers in the area were too scared to pick the baby from where he was dumped.

But they said they suspected that the baby belonged to the mentally-unstable woman.

A driver, Mr. Lasisi Gafar, said since the incident, nobody had seen the woman in the area.

He said, “There used to be a female lunatic around the street who was pregnant, but since the child had been dumped I have not seen any trace of her. We suspect that she was the one that dumped the baby here, but nobody could find her to question her.”

He added that neither he nor most people in the area knew when and how the baby was dumped by the roadside.

It was gathered that the baby later died after struggling to live for over six hours.

A trader, who identified herself simply as Iya Monsura, said, “The child was alive as of 11am, but when government officials came around 5pm, he was dead. They took the dead body away.”

It was learnt that no efforts was made to report the case of the dumped baby to the police. Some of the residents said such attempt could put them in trouble as the police might treat them as suspects.

Someone could’ve ran to d nearest police station to get a permit to care 4 dat child b4 taking him/her ti d hospital or beta still contact d nearest hospital. This our country sef. Chai!!!may dis baby RIP.

  • OMG, nobody can call d police or even carry the baby b4 the police comes, they keep on snapping pictures what’s d use of the pictures now when the baby has already died.. May the soul of the innocence child rest in peace

  • That’s how ppl are D’s days, instead of giving an helping hands they prefer to take pictures and watch you sink cos dere mind is totally on the pics they will upload to social network. Too bad

  • All of them are heartless. Looking at a baby and watch him die. Pure wickedness. May his innocent souk rest in peace, amen

  • I would have picked up that child…..The observers were wicked and superstitious mscheeww

  • What kind of people that cannot atleast help the baby before the government officials come. May GOD deliver this country

  • Some persons Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ just making comment as if u guys Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ not from naija! Because ☀̤̣̈̇f d way police behave I don’t blame d onlookers, why if u may ask? By the time they go A̶̲̥̅̊₪d̶̲̥̅̊ report automatically that person becomes d first suspect! A good samaritan will become d victim. Until d law enforcement agencies change their ways people will still see such thing n pretend they didn’t see anything even T☀̤̣̈̇ helping accident victim. Sweet angel RIP

  • So, no one could even remove the plaster from the baby’s mouth? Someone could have atleast inform the nearest local govt council. Too bad!

  • speechless!!
after people would say Jonathan is no good now tell me what part do we all play in one another’s lives….. SO SAD!

  • Imagin they were takin pictures of the baby, non of them could lift a finger to help dat little baby even the mothers amoung them….God! This is pure wickedness.

  • It’s so sad,am sure some stood there till the baby stop breathing .his blood will be required from them, because they where opportune to give an helping hand but they didnt.GSM has taken the place of helping hand, instead of calling authority.God have mercy on our land. But why didn’t Jonah remain us on what to do with our common sense?

  • Technology and social media has really spoilt this country, people will rather take pictures and update their social media instead of saving soul. Secondly, the attitude of our law enforcement agents are horrible. Lord have mercy on this country on different levels, amen.

  • Social media is causing a lot of problems in this country. Someone is found dying instead of people to help they bring out their phones to take pictures. How about using that phone to call for help? At least remove the plaster from the baby’s mouth so he can breath. Gone are the days when bad things don’t happen when women are around, in the old days a woman will pick that child up, clean him and even breast feed him if she could but these days women are the doers of evil. God help us.

  • OMG frm 11 to 5 without help? Nigerians chai. They were busy snapping n uploading d pix on social media.poor child

  • You see my problems wt Nigerians? Ds Internet stuff is making them mad . nobody could help but they were busy snapping pics.as for the so called mad woman they shld look for her & catch her cos she is not mad anything. Who gave her the idea of using plaster to cover the baby’s mouth& where did she get those fine clothes& diaper from? Yeye dey smell
