Pregnant Jehovah Witness Who Refused Blood Transfusion Dies

A 28-year-old seven months’ pregnant Jehovah’s witness, with acute promyelocytic leukaemia dies in Australia after refusing blood transfusion.

A harrowing experience for the doctors of Prince of Wales and Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, as they were forced to let a pregnant woman and her unborn child die in hospital after the mother refused a blood transfusion because of her religious beliefs as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The case has now raised many questions pertaining to responsibilities of the medical profession to a patient and to a fetus.

More than 80 percent of pregnant women with acute promyelocytic leukaemia go into remission with the right kind of treatment saving the life of the fetus. But with refusal of treatment in this case, the staff had to watch the woman die.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood transfusions emanates from a Biblical standpoint to refrain from taking in blood as mentioned both in the New and Old Testament.

Such ethical and religious belief which our society has inbreed poses dilemma among medical practitioners: should there be a right to override the wishes of a patient in the hands of a doctor or does a fetus have any rights to lifesaving surgeries or treatments that the mother doesn’t want?

  • Hmmmmmm all this over over zealous and over religious people acting like they know more than God. See how she just killed herself. If u ask me, that’s suicide cos she allowed herself die when she could have been saved.

    The Bible clearly states “For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to you, except these necessary things, to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If you carefully keep yourselves from these things, you will prosper. Good health to you!” (Ac 15:22, 28, 29)
    So why do otherwise?

  • Dis was hw my friend lost her womb till date, she refused blood transfussion n nided 2 be operated upon b4 they could see a dr who agrees 2 operate on her without blood transfussion it was late, d baby was dead already thus damaging her womb She lost her baby n womb, thank God she has a baby girl b4 d inccident,

  • Though she is dead she is in Gods memory for obeying his clear command Abstain from blood we should nt love our life more than God obedience to his word is very important and we can do dat by studying his word to have accurate knowledge of it God is the owner of life if we lose it in obedience to him will he leave us?..

  • This is what religion has brought us into. I wonder the part of bible these Jehovah witness read from. When I hear tins like this I feel some religion bodies should be scrap to protect the people who pratice it and protect the name of Christ!

    Obey God as ruler rather than men.yea she sacrificed her temporary life to get the real life.i am proud of her.she is in Jehovahs memory.
