13 Year-Old Gets Contraceptive Implant At School Without Mum’s Consent

A 13-year-old gets contraceptive implant at school without her mum’s knowledge or consent.

According to the Mirror, Layla Rylands was fitted with the hormone-releasing rod four days after her 13th birthday. It is inserted under the skin on the arm under local anaesthetic.

Mum Bernadette Jessop said she only found out a year later. She said: “I felt sick. The school asked not long ago for consent for her to watch a film about sex.

“I didn’t give it until I knew what it contained, yet I don’t get the chance to consent to the implant?” Hull City Council has sexual health workers visit schools to give contraceptive advice. If pupils are judged “competent” to decide on the implant, parents are not contacted.

Layla goes to Ashwell Academy in Bransholme, which takes students with “complex needs”.

Mrs Jessop added: “How can you deem a child with problems competent?” Eunice Evans, chairman of governors at Ashwell, said: “The academy has a duty of care to students.”
