Teacher Dumps Unruly Autistic Student In Trash Can
A special education teacher in Georgia, Mary Katherine Pursley, allegedly stuffed a second grader with autism into a garbage can, claiming he acted like the trash-dwelling “Sesame Street” character Oscar the Grouch, police said.
The woman who teaches at Mt. Bethel Elementary School in Marietta, had threatened a Sesame Street-style shaming to the supposedly unruly student on Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“The accused told the victim, ‘If he had trashy behavior like Oscar, he’d go to the trash can,’” Pursley’s arrest warrant says.
She then allegedly picked up the boy by his legs and dumped him head first into a trash can, asking him, “Are you going to stop yelling now?” The boy cried and screamed for her to stop, as three of her colleagues and several special needs students watched.
Pursley, 45, was charged with felony cruelty to children and released Tuesday on $5,000 bail, the Marietta Daily Journal reported.
The 21-year veteran of the school district is now on paid leave while the incident is investigated.
