Girl,12, & Boy,16, Each Lose An Arm In Horrific Shark Attack

A 12-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy were standing in waist-deep water along the North Carolina coast when they were each attacked by a shark in separate incidents on Sunday just an hour apart. The victims each lost an arm in the horrific attack which happened just 20 yards off shore.

The victims in each attack were visiting the beach community near the South Carolina border from different parts of North Carolina when they suffered the life-threatening injuries, authorities said. If not for quick-thinking bystanders and a fast response by paramedics, both could have bled out.

But each had help stanching the blood flow and were airlifted to a local hospital. One bystander used the leash from a boogie board as a tourniquet to help the girl, who lost her arm below the elbow and also suffered tissue damage to her left leg.

Authorities cannot confirm if the same shark was responsible for both maulings. The victims had little or no warning of the danger lurking just below the water’s surface, witnesses told authorities.
