45-Year-Old Mum Seeks Compensation After Discovering Years Later Her Mum Damaged Her Brain

45-year-old Wendy Miller is seeking compensation after discovering that her mother hit her on the head when she was eight-months-old with a milk bottle which led to her suffering a stroke and injuring her skull.

The Daily Record reports:

Throughout her traumatic childhood, Wendy Miller endured years of bullying and teasing about being a slow learner.

But her adoptive parents kept a bottle attack by her birth mother from her.

She was hit over the head by a milk bottle and fractured her skull before suffering a stroke.

The mum of three said: “I struggled all through my childhood and never knew why.

“I was adopted at the age of eight by a couple from Dalkeith but remember nothing about the year-and-a-half I spent with my natural mother before being sent to a children’s home.

“Just over a year ago, my adopted mum took me aside and finally told me that, as a baby, I was subjected to a violent attack by my natural mum.

Wendy has applied for social work files to tell her exactly what happened to her when she was a baby.

One file from 1977 gives the reason for Wendy being placed in care as “at eight-and-a-half months of age was hit on head by mother with a milk bottle”. It goes on to describe injuries to the left side of her head.

Wendy added: “To suddenly be able to read about why you are the way you are is quite a shock. It explains so much but at the same time has left me reeling with so many unanswered questions.

Wendy said “I don’t even know my mother’s real name as it seems, from the records I’ve now seen, that she used many different ones.

A spokeswoman for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority said: “We cannot discuss individual cases but sympathise with anyone who suffers from an injury or debilitating condition.

“We can only waive the two-year time limit for claiming compensation if exceptional circumstances meant the applicant could not have applied earlier and the evidence the applicant can provide in support of their application means it can be determined without further extensive inquiries.”

“We are in the process of having medical experts examine just how the effects of that brutal attack have affected her life.

“In over 40 years of making CICA claims for victims, I‘ve never come across such a complex case.”
