Couple Sentenced To Jail For Attempting To Sell Baby

A couple has been sentenced by a circuit court in Accra, Ghana to 5-years in jail for attempting to sell their 22-month-old baby for GHc 12,000.00.

Ghana Web reports:

Yaw Amediame and his wife Kosuavi Kondo  both migrant famers from Eduano, near Assin Foso are said to have offered their son for sale to an undercover Police Officer who posed as a Catholic Priest. The couple pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and human trafficking. The court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman Budu convicted them on their plea and sentenced the couple accordingly, Dodzi Kondo, an accomplice is said to be at large.

The trial judge ordered the Anti -Human Trafficking Unit of Ghana Police Service to take the baby boy to the Department of Social Welfare to be catered for. According to the court it was obvious that the victim’s mother could not take care of him.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Adjei told the court that the complainants were Joseph Ackah and Mary Akakpo, married couple residing at Kasoa in the Central Region.

ASP Adjei said last year, the convicted couple migrated from Togo to Ghana to engage in farming. In the course of their farming, they claimed they brought large quantity of okro to sell but they ran at a loss as the vegetable was not patronized.

Prosecution said Amediame claimed he could not raise money to take care of his family as he was cash trapped so he discussed the issue with his wife Kosuavi and Dodzi therefore advised the convicts to sell their son (name withheld) to somebody to solve their financial difficulties.

Prosecution said the convicts and Dodzi discussed the issue with Madam Mary Akakpo who assured them of a ready market, however prosecution said Madam Akakpo alerted the Police and informed the convicts that a Catholic Priest was ready to buy the victim.

  • Imagine this rubbish? So selling your child will end your financial problem? Hmmm God have mercy ooooo. Thank God for madam mary who He use to rescue that poor innocent child. They even deserve more than 5yrs. Nonsense!

  • They will serve as a scape goat to others involved in such a devilish act.

  • I don’t condone what these couple did. Very wrong of then to try to sell their child where some women are looking for children. But to be honest how many pple wld hv been willing to help them if they asked for financial assistance. You would be amazed @ what pple will tell them if they had asked for help. They would probably had said put up ur child for adoption, why wld u hv a child if u can’t afford to care of ur child etc. I bet u some pple will tell them that instead of helping them. The presence of God was with that child. Thank God for his life and may God continue to protect him. May God also provide for his parents so they can afford to take care of him in future.

  • So instead of them to go and work hard, it’s to sell their baby. They should enjoy in jail jail nd baby given to someone that values him
