A shocked wife in India, has approached the Kerala Women’s Commission for help, after she was dumped by her husband through a WhatsApp message ten days after they got married.

According to the Indian express, the 21-year-old Kerala college student stated in her complaint at the women’s commission that her husband travelled to Ber Dubai where he works and refused to answer any of her calls and was shocked when he finally replied by sending her a ‘triple Talaq’ over WhatsApp.

Talaq in Islam is the right given to a man to divorce his wife. Now, the commission is looking into the credibility of a ‘WhatsApp talaq’.

A member of the commission, J Prameela Devi, stated that the 27-year-old man’s message read:

“Why are you calling me? I do not like you. Do not wait for me. If we like apple, will we keep eating it every day? We will like to eat other fruits also. Talak Talak Talak.”

The girl’s mother had reportedly paid the groom a dowry of Rs 10 lakh and also given him 79 sovereigns of gold. The shocking incident has led to the woman and her younger sister dropping out of school.

The Commission has sent a message to the parents of the man asking them to appear before it in their next meeting.

Reacting to the incident, Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen, state President, T P Abdulla Majeed, said:

“There is no validity of such an act. Some people are playing with religion. Talaq cannot be practiced in such a flimsy manner. It has got three stages. It has to be used only in a situation wherein it is extremely difficult to take forward a marriage.”
