“My wife thought I was a fraudster” – Ali Baba Reveals

Like plenty of Nigerian women who are in the dark about their husband’s sources of income, the pioneer of comedy in Nigeria, Ali Baba, revealed that his wife thought he was a fraudster  when he made his first million in 1994.

To put her mind at rest about his source of income, the godfather of comedy whose real name is Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere said he had to take her to one of his shows before she believed he made the money from stand-up comedy.

“My wife first thought I was a 419 when she realised the amount of money I was making. She didn’t believe me until I invited her for a show where I was paid to do stand-up comedy. Some of the shows might be hosted by Patrick Doyle or Yinka Craig while I was only doing stand-up. I learnt the ropes of being an MC at that time. But guess what, I was making more money than the MCs. It was until when she came around to see me perform on stage cracking jokes for a number of guests that she realised how much I could make doing comedy.”
