Controversy As Nigeria’s Northern Lawmakers Kick Against Birth Control, Claim It’s Anti-Islam

A motion moved by a member of the House of Representatives, Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole, on Tuesday, November 24, titled, ‘Need for the federal government to curb population explosion in Nigeria,’ caused an uproar as Northern lawmakers opposed the motion, saying it was a direct attack on Islam.

Kolawole had requested that the house urge the Federal Government to create an effective policy to curb the alarming rate of population growth as well as educate Nigerians on the need for family planning through the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

He argued that this had become imperative judging by a report by a United States based Population Reference Bureau which projected that the country’s population will shoot up to 433 million in 2050, making Nigeria the third most populous in the world, only behind China and India.

He added that the failure of the National Population Commission (NPC) to get an accurate figure of the country’s population had put more pressure on the country’s infrastructure and finance, contributing significantly to the high unemployment rate, poverty and crime.

A lawmaker from Bauchi state, Sani Abdul, however, dismissed his argument and the motion in general as unnecessary and a waste of time.

The speaker, Yakubu Dogara disagreed with Abdul, noting that the motion was necessary as it highlighted the need to plan. Still, Abdul insisted Nigeria’s resources and landmass can handle any population explosion.

Other lawmakers, mostly from the north, also spoke against the motion, claiming population control is anti-Islam and a direct attack on their religious beliefs.

Another lawmaker, Zakare Mohammed, said though he was not against the motion, the country’s culture must be preserved.

Ruling on the motion, the speaker said the Committee on Justice, Population, Rules and Business should examine the motion and advise accordingly.
