Cancer Survivor Shares How She Beat the Odds to Welcome ‘Miracle’ Daughters

A cancer survivor, Janine McMullen, who was reportedly diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system at just 22 and told she would never have children has shared a quite inspiring story on how she beat the odds.

She said,

“I was on holiday with my mum and was laughing when I noticed a big lump in the middle of my neck. It turned out to be Hodgkin lymphoma. I had to have lots of radiotherapy and remember been strapped to the bed and the beams going around my body.”

She suffered a relapse and further cancerous tissue was found in her chest, very close to her heart, meaning radiotherapy would be too dangerous, so, she had to have intensive chemotherapy instead which though successful, left a potentially devastating impact.

She continued,

“I had no idea how cancer could impact my life, but while I was being treated doctors warned me that there was a high chance that I would be infertile and would never be able to have children. I just couldn’t believe it. It was heartbreaking. I was so young and had my whole life ahead of me and in my mind that had included children.”

Janine, now 43, however beat the odds less two years after treatment and conceived naturally. She said,

“I couldn’t believe it and neither could the doctors. I remember lots of them coming to see my baby to make sure was she ok and to see this baby that they’d thought would never be possible.

Now Jordanne is 18 years old and in the Royal Engineers. It’s amazing. But my luck didn’t stop there and some years later I went on to have another girl Molly who is now eight.”

Unfortunately, Janine was again diagnosed of breast cancer in December 2014. She said,

“I just couldn’t believe it. I went with my mam to the appointment at the RVI and when the doctor broke the news we were just looking back and forth at each other.

My mouth fell open and I had no words and I was just shocked to the core. He told us it was a nasty cancer as it was growing fast, but he would be able to treat it.

My daughters gave me something to fight for and I decided I wasn’t going anywhere. My treatment was gruelling but I saw firsthand just how far it has come on since I was diagnosed back in my 20s.”
