Jumoke & Sunday Orisaguna Open Up on their Lives Before Her Fame | Sunday Says He’s Not Afraid

In an exclusive chat with Encomium, the fast rising mother-of-two and her husband, Sunday Orisaguna share on their lives before her fame and more. Read excerpts below…

On why Jumoke came to Lagos without him, Sunday said,

“I live in Ire, Osun state. We were living together there before she came over to Lagos. Ire Poly went on strike early in the year. Because of that, things were a bit slow. There were no sales. I am an artisan. I make aluminum doors and windows. She is a hairdresser.
Students patronized her a lot, but once there is strike, sales will be on a low scale. She decided to come over to Lagos and find something doing. She didn’t have it in mind to do a particular business. She just said when she comes over, she will get any profitable venture she can engage in. it was when she got to Lagos she called to tell me that she was selling bread. She left our first child, Grace at home. She said the small one will not stay because she is a baby. We communicated very well. There is no problem. We agreed she should come over…I didn’t know things will turn around for us this soon…It is overwhelming…”

On if he feels threatened by her fame

“I am not afraid because when we had nothing, she was always there. If I said I needed this, she would give me. I am not afraid. If she is rich today, we both own it. I trust her for that. She has been a very good wife. I believe she will continue to be good. We have been married for six years.”

On how they met

“She came to greet her grandma in my area some years back. She came from Lagos. She went to her mother’s younger sister, who introduced her to hairdressing. I used to go to where she was learning hairdressing to toast her but she insisted that she came to learn hairdressing and not to befriend a man.

I used to go there often and after six months, she said yes, that was how it all started.”

Jumoke, who stopped schooling after her primary education as there was no money to further her education, said she’s loving her new career as a model and feels humbled. Sharing on life before her recent fame, she said,

All what I had in mind was a means of survival…I don’t know anybody in Lagos. I just came over to Lagos. Someone told me that I should come and sell bread in Lagos that I will make money from it. I decided to come because it wasn’t something that was morally wrong. I know I cannot steal or do anything that could tarnish my image or that of my family. The elder brother of one of my friends took me to the bakery where I got bread. We all slept at the bakery in an open space. All hawkers slept when we’re back from hawking around 11pm daily. We don’t pay for the space. It was part of the good gesture of the owner.

I used to back my baby to wherever I was going. I know I cannot leave her at the bakery. Nobody will help me take care of her. At times, my boss also helped me out. He would make sure she ate and watched over her incase I left her at the bakery. But most times, we went together. The money I got from my business was what we fed on. I saved as well.

I take N5,000 worth. Sometimes I sell everything. At times, I have N1,000 worth of bread left. I made a gain of N400 to N500 daily. I do contribution, we ate as well out of it…I didn’t just want to sit down doing nothing.

On fears her fame may ruin her marriage, she said,

I cannot leave my husband. He too cannot leave me because we love each other. My marriage will remain intact by God’s grace. And God will also help me to continue to be level-headed.

On plans to get an education

“Yes, I really want to go back to school. I want to study Law. I like the profession. I believe I will be able to help people when I become a lawyer.”
