Ese Rita Oruru, the recently freed 14-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted from Bayelsa State by a man simply identified as Yunusa, taken to Kano, converted to Islam and forced into marriage (read here and here) was reunited with her mother in Abuja on Tuesday, almost eight months after her alleged abduction.

According to Punch, authorities including Kano and Delta state governors, Abdullahi Ganguje and Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, have demanded the prosecution of Yunusa and others involved in the alleged abduction.

In a statement issued by the Delta State Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Okowa expressed shock at the abduction given the age of the girl and the lack of consent by her parents.

“I am very much interested in this case, not only because the girl is an indigene of Delta State, but for the rule of law. I want the police to pursue it to its logical conclusion. Nothing short of diligent prosecution of the abductors will be satisfactory,” he stated.
