5 Foods That Are Probably Ruining Your Sex Drive

Dolapo Marinho
Is your sexual appetite taking a nosedive? Your excessive consumption of the following foods might just be responsible…
1. Mints
Apparently, eating large amounts of mints can drastically reduce your bedroom urges! This is due to the menthol which is a known suppressant of testosterone levels, the male hormone that helps to get you in the mood!
2. Alcohol
Though not technically a ‘food’, alcohol consumed in large quantities can really put a downer on between-the-sheets activities.  Research attributes this is due to the hops (a herb used in the manufacturing process).  Hops are known to have estrogenic properties, meaning they act like the female hormone, oestrogen, lowering testosterone and ultimately, libido in men.
3. Artificial sweeteners
We’ve all been there, on our journey to lose weight and reduce sugar consumption, we reach for the artificial sweetener without guilt.  However you’ve probably been consuming aspartame, a popular offender on the bad ingredients list. Aspartame can affect many hormones including seratonin, an important hormone for normal sexual function. If you find this is a problem for you, ditch the artificial sweetener and use small amounts of natural sugar, like honey, instead.
4. Coffee
Long time caffeiners, I have some bad news for you. Coffee is known to impair the adrenal glands, which are responsible for the control and regulation of certain hormones.  Over time, the sex hormones in the body also become affected, reducing the urge for sexual gratification.
5. CHeeeeese….
No, I don’t mean the cheese you say when taking a picture! Processed cheese made for cow’s milk contain high levels of growth hormone which they use to fatten the cows.  If consumed regularly by humans, large amounts of these artificial hormones accumulate in the body, blocking the body’s own ability to produce sex hormones. A reduction in sex hormone leads to a decline in desire.
There you have it.  As with all good dietary advice, consume everything in moderation and you should be fine!
