Father Shot Outside Durban Home While Protecting His Family

A father, identified as Jameel Kader, was shot in the face while trying to protect his wife and children from a robber outside their home in Durban, South Africa.

IDurban reports that the 37-year-old father with his wife, Mehfooza, and daughters, Bibi Hafsa, Yusra, Sabah and Juwairiya, aged between 3 to 11, arrived home at about 4.30 pm from the Pavilion Shopping Centre where they had spent Father’s Day.

They were removing groceries from the car parked in the driveway when two men approached with firearms drawn, demanding the keys to the family’s car, a relative named Musher Khan said.

He continued, “Jameel was concerned for his family’s safety as these men were brandishing guns near them. They began to get aggressive and there was a scuffle. My cousin ended up throwing the car keys over the wall, on to his property.”

“Fearing the worst, Jameel followed him and ended up pushing him. The accomplice then came from behind and placed Jameel in a headlock. He put a gun to his head. During the tussle, I think the gun moved from his head to his jaw. That’s when he was shot.”

Kader had to undergo eight hours of reconstructive surgery to his lower jaw on Monday and remained on life support for the next few days.

According to Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, a case of attempted murder and carjacking has been opened at Sydenham SAPS to investigate the shooting.
