Inspiring! Homeless Prom Queen Beats the Odd, Graduates 2 Years Early

A homeless teenager from Washington DC has defied odds and graduated high school two years early despite working 25 hours a week.

The 16 -year -old teen Destyni Tyree was living in a homeless shelter in Washington DC along with 243 other families when the then 14-year-oldenrolled into Roosevelt S.T.A.Y. High School, ABC reports.

“It’s OK,” Tyree said. “At first, I didn’t like it because I was used to my own space.”

She had been forced out of previous schools when her mother lost her job a couple of years ago and was evicted from the home and the family struggled to support itself in a city with sky-rocketing rent and ever-increasing costs of living expenses.

“I had a lot of issues with classmates and teachers. It was just too much,” she said.

They made the difficult decision of moving into D.C. General, the city’s largest homeless shelter.

But within two years, the youngster was able to dramatically turn her life around by applying herself in school.

Destyni was voted prom queen by her peers and was captain of the cheer leading squad.

She also completed high school in two years, earning a 4.0 grade point average and securing a full-ride scholarship to Potomac State College of West Virginia University, despite working for 25 hours a week in an ice cream store.

Tyree’s motivations for graduating early are grounded in her role as a big sister, saying she wants her little sister to always have someone to look up to. But — she’s also ready to spread her wings, she said.

Tyree said: “Quite frankly, I’m just ready to go and live life.

“I know there’s a better life out there for me.”

“It gets better. If you work hard enough, if you have that drive, if you have that motivation, it gets a lot better. I just time managed. I just wake up and do what I gotta do.”
