Indian Boy Reunites With Family Six Years After Kidnap

A 12-year-old Indian boy, identified as Sonu, has been reunited with his family six years after going missing from Delhi, India.

According to Daily Times, the young boy was allegedly abducted by a tenant living in his parents’ house from the Indian capital and taken to Bangladesh where he was made to work as a servant.

Sonu was discovered by a Bangladeshi mechanic, Jamal Ibn Musa, who then alerted the police and eventually traced his family to India.

Speaking to Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Star, Musa said, “They used to torture the boy and keep him busy with hard work around the day at my neighbour’s house. I informed the police about it around three years ago.”

He further said that although he told the local police about the boy’s situation, they “kept mum even after visiting the house.”

According to him, he rescued Sonu in December last year and was able to produce him before a court. which then sent the boy to a children’s welfare home.

Musa travelled to Delhi on the 14th of May to search for “a vague address” that the boy had given him and found Sonu’s parents in Delhi’s Seema Puri area.

“His parents were so happy to hear the news of their missing son,” he said.

On Thursday, Indian officials flew Sonu to Delhi from Dhaka after a Bangladeshi court allowed him to return home.

His DNA matched with his mother Mumtaz Begum, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj revealed. She confirmed that Sonu had indeed been kidnapped from the Indian capital.

Two women, accused of abducting the boy from Delhi, are said to be facing a criminal investigation in Bangladesh.

Sonu’s excited mother admitted that “she was happy to be reunited with her son” and felt like “celebrating Eid today.” While describing Musa as an “angel”, she said,”I can’t thank him enough. He is a great man.”
