5 Overzealous Things You Will Probably Do As a New Mum

Becoming a mum comes with immeasurable fulfillment and excitement. In the wake of this surreal experience, first-time mums tend to do some often overzealous things sure to create embarrassing or hilarious flashbacks. Find 5 of such below.

1. Checking if baby is still alive. Newborns sleep a whole lot and can be so peaceful while at it. When they have their rounds of sleep, whether during the day or night, most new mums can’t help checking on a regular basis if baby is still breathing. Some would even fret so much when baby sleeps for longer than usual and interrupt their sweet dreams, making them fussy.

2. Cry, cry baby. The constant panic and fluctuating hormones to support breastfeeding and recovery from pregnancy and childbirth may make a new mum quite emotional. Some cry when their babies do out of sheer sympathy until they eventually realize babies, in fact, cry a lot, learn to decode the cries and find effective ways to soothe.

Some new mums also cry when baby refuses to breastfeed, take the bottle, has trouble sleeping or shows signs of illness.

3. Too much expert advice. From books on getting baby to sleep, feeding, baby milestones to baby’s health and so on, some new mums buy enough to equip a University library, so they can consult them for help along their new journey as a mum. In addition, they consult Google over every symptom or issues baby may have and lose sleep when nothing seems to help until they realize no two babies are the same and talking to other mums as well as modifying tips learned in order to work out effective remedies or routines, using baby’s cues, are crucial.

4. Overpack the diaper bag. You should see the size of some diaper bags some new mums carry around for even simple outings to imagine the quantity of bottles, extra onesies or change of clothes, hand sanitizers, diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and so on, they packed. In the same vein, most new mums fill their nursery with unnecessary supplies and gear baby never gets to use.

5. Get extreme with busting germs. Most new mums won’t let others touch their baby if they could help it. While it’s important for you, other caregivers and visitors to sanitize your hands before holding or touching baby, don’t freak out when there are exceptions. Babies should also be allowed free exploration during play. Don’t keep them off the floor or sanitize the floor every other minute to get rid of germs. They do need a bit of exposure to germs give their immunity system the capacity to effectively fight off infections.
