Two Female Beggars Nabbed For Begging With ‘Rented’ Babies

Two female beggars identified as Hadiza Nosiru and Salamotu Salitu, have been nabbed by the monitoring team of Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for using ‘rented’ babies to beg for alms.

According to The Nation, the women were caught yesterday in Oyingbo, Lagos, and three babies, who were less than one month old, were recovered from them.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the women were not the biological mothers of the babies, but were given out to the women by their parents, a source from the ministry said.

The source added that the two suspects paid the mothers of the babies daily. One of the mothers, identified as Tawa Aregbesola from Ibadan, was paraded at the state secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, yesterday. The mother of four admitted that she had an agreement with one of the suspects to take her baby to beg for alms between 5 pm and 7pm daily for between N1000 and N1500 and did not know where her baby was taken to.

While expressing her displeasure at the use of babies for begging, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, said efforts would be intensified to stop street begging and urged the public to support the government in its fight against the menace.

Also noting that the practice was prevalent among female beggars especially from the north, she promised to take legal steps to deter others from engaging in such practices.

  • Na wa oh the hustle is real. Rent a baby to beg? What sort of mothers do we have theses days?

  • The authorities should go to Obalende bus stop and National stadium Surulere and catch more women begging with little babies. Each day i see the way infants are being treated all in the name of begging for alms, i say to myself that these women ain’t the mothers of these infants. Some are two different babies merged together as twins to attract sympathy. People have lost their minds in this country.
