Police Rule Out Food Poisoning In The Deaths Of Six Siblings In Anambra

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Hosea Karma, has quelled controversies surrounding the death of six siblings in Ekwulumili, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Punch reports.

According to the report, the commissioner stated via a telephone interview with Punch reporters that the children were not poisoned, as speculations have suggested.

Sources say that there were speculations that the six siblings died after their parents had a heated quarrel with a family relation over a piece of family farmland.

However, Karma has insisted that the children were not poisoned by anyone. He said, “Our suspicion is that the beans might be contaminated by preservative chemical … The parents of the children, who spoke with us, did not tell us that anybody poisoned or killed their children. The mother of the children told us that the children died after eating a meal she cooked by herself and served to her children by herself.

He further said, “So why should we start arresting people on the issue when the parents of the children have not said they were suspecting that somebody poisoned their food or killed their children? The six children died after eating their mother’s food.”

During the preliminary investigations into the matter, the Anambra State Police Command had raised the alarm that youths in the community had impeded investigations into the matter.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ali Okechukwu, had told Punch correspondents that the youths in the area were hostile to the investigating police team.

He said, “I don’t know what their problem is. They are hostile to our men, especially that first day. They didn’t allow our men (police) to enter the community to carry out investigations. They blocked everywhere.”

  • What’s the youths’ problem? 6 human beings died at once and they are impeding investigation. It’s possible the woman’s statement was doctored just to prevent arrests. Was the beans sold to only the woman? How come no other death has been reported in the community?

  • They shouldn’t rule out anything yet, they should investigate where she bought the beans and see if the beans is poisoned. There are several ways to kill a rat, six innocent children died for crying out loud.

  • Hmmmmmmmmm what is wrong with the youths in the community? They should allow the police do their job. But saying they ate contaminated beans is what I don’t understand. Where was the beans bought? Has anyone reported similar case of eating beans and someone died? Because I am sure she’s not the only one who would have bought that beans. They need to find out where the beans came from to avoid further deaths if at all the beans caused their deaths.

  • if the community youths stopped their entry into the village to carry out investigations why are they now ruling out food poisoning as a cause of the deaths of those kids?.. plus its typical of village homes to share common kitchens, anything could have happened under such circumstance.
