Q: My 26-year-old daughter had a surgery for uterine prolapse owing to prolonged labour and some other complications during the birth of her twin boys. Less than 6 months after the surgery, the symptoms are beginning to reappear. Before the surgery, she’d used pessaries to no avail. Please, what is the way out? Are there lifestyle changes that may help relieve her discomfort?

Dr. Alex Kaoranu Molukwu (OB/GYN) says:

There are several factors that may contribute to the weakening of the pelvic muscles. Obesity, chronic cough or straining, chronic constipation, chronic anaemia and sickle cell disease contribute to the development of uterine prolapse.

Kegel exercises offer non-surgical option to the treatment of the problem. These exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. To do kegel exercises, tighten your pelvic floor muscles as if you are trying to hold back urine. Hold the muscles tight for a few minutes and then release. Repeat this for several times anywhere and at any time.

There is also need to maintain a healthy body weight. Eat a healthy diet balanced in protein, fat and carbohydrates. There is absolute need to stop smoking, lifting heavy objects. I also advise she holds packages close to her body with arms bent; her abdominal muscles should be held tight and she should take small steps at a time and go slowly.

Age is on her side and perfect recovery is close at hand.
