Q: After 4 pregnancies, I’ve developed a case of haemorrhoids that just never seem to go away with home treatment. I’m too embarrassed to really discuss this with my doctor. Could there be a problem?

Dr. Alex Kaoranu Molukwu (OB/GYN) says:

Haemorrhoids (piles) are swollen varicose veins which are inside the rectum and may protrude through the anus.

Pregnancy and vaginal delivery predispose women to developing haemorrhoids because of hormonal changes and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Intestinal worms and hereditary factors are also contributory factors to developing piles.

It has been estimated that 25% to 35% of pregnant women are affected by this condition. In fact, in certain populations, up to 85% of pregnancies are affected by haemorrhoids  after twenty (20) weeks.

It is very important to note that haemorrhoids are not the only cause of pain and rectal bleeding. Your physician should properly confirm the diagnosis before initiating definitive treatment. Haemorrhoids should be treated to prevent more serious complications including inflammation, thrombosis and prolapse.

There is a proverbial saying that if you hide an ailment, that ailment will ultimately hide you. So, please consult a physician.
