“Dad begged me not to let his legacy die” – Sonny Okosun’s Daughter Says After An Impressive Performance

Faith Okosun, made a surprise appearance at the recent edition of the Africa Meets Reggae concert in Lagos. Reports have it that she did not only thrill the audience to some of her foster dad’s hit songs, she put up an impressive performance that kept many wondering. She worked as a back-up vocalist to the late King of Ozzidi music for about 15 years before he died in 2008.

In an interview with PunchNg, she told correspondent how she had worked quietly to try and fill the void her father left when he died.

“Before now, I have deliberately restricted my activities to the church. I felt that I was not ready to revive the family’s music tradition and continue from where my dad stopped. But I have changed my mind. Now, I have decided to take the bull by the horns and do the needful,” Faith says.

She stated however, that most members of her fathers band had left, but this is not going to deter her passion and mission, as she has recruited some young people to join her in reviving the band and that most of them are enthusiastic about it because they have a flare for music. She feels that she owes the departed musician a duty to keep the band and his music alive. She recalls that just before he passed on, he made her promise to continue in his footsteps.

“Dad begged me not to let his legacy die. At first, I didn’t understand what he meant. Then I started seeing him in my dreams and messages kept coming to me, reminding me about the pledge I made. Now I have decided to do something about it. When dad was alive, you couldn’t simply describe him as either a reggae musician or funk artiste. He played all kinds of music. I am just like him and I intend to remain so. But, I am more inclined to play reggae music. I think reggae is my strong point,” she says.

Sonny Okosun was known for his exotic fusion of Afro-beat, reggae and funk music.
