Valentina Guebuza, the daughter of Mozambique’s former President Armando Guebuza was shot dead by her husband, Zofino Muiuane, with a pistol in their home in the capital, Maputo, on Wednesday, 14th December, police say.

Her husband, a manager at Mozambique’s first mobile phone company M-Cel, was subsequently arrested in relation to the alleged murder but has not yet been charged.

Police spokesman, Inacio Dina told newsmen:

“The first indications we have is that this was an authentic case of domestic violence which ended, sadly, in the death of the citizen Valentina Guebuza”.

While police said the shooting was a case of domestic violence, they also said they were still investigating the motive.

In July 2014, Valentina married Muiuane, “a humble and hardworking young man”, at a lavish ceremony described as “the wedding of the year”.

Mrs Guebuza became one of Mozambique’s wealthiest businesswomen during her father, Armando Guebuza‘s presidency between 2005 and 2014. Business magazine Forbes listed her as one of the 20 most powerful women in Africa in 2013.

The killing has shocked many people and it is rare to hear of domestic violence in wealthy and politically linked families in Mozambique.

The couple had their first child, a girl, in July 2015.
