Ugandan Police Stop Wedding of 14 year Old Girl | Arrest Husband To be & Parents
Ugandan police have stopped a wedding that was supposed to take place between a 14 year old girl and a 22 year old man.
According to reports, the girl who is a secondary school dropout, is currently four months pregnant.
Abdu Kalimu Ngobi and Faridah Kagoya, the girl’s parents, were said to have agreed to marry off their daughter to Talyaka Swaliki after collecting Shs 200, 000 and a goat as bride price.
The police however arrived after the traditional wedding ceremony was over, scattering the event, leaving family and friends running for saftey. When the girl was questioned, she denied being 14, but instead, claimed she was 18 and stayed that it was her choice to marry her lover.
“I am not young and I don’t know why police disrupted our function. I love my husband and. I asked my parents’ permission to get married.”
Her parents also supported her claim, claiming that their daughter was 18 and not 14.
“She dropped out of school and told us that she wanted to get married to the man who was responsible for her pregnancy and as a Muslim, I had no objection,” said her father.
Daily Monitor reports that the groom has been in a relationship with the girl for two years before she fell pregnant. He said hat her parents only demanded for the bride price and the goat not informing him that she was under age. The police have however confirmed that that the parents are to be charged with marrying off an underage girl while the groom is to be charged with defilement.
