14 Year Old Girl Married off and Forcefully Converted to Islam in Katsina Allegedly Disowns Parents

It was reported last year October that the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabiru Usman, allegedly married off a 14-year-old girl, Habiba Isiyaku, to her abductor,  Jamilu Lawal, without her parent’s consent after she was forcefully converted from Christianity to Islam in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina state (read here).

According to a recent report, the young school girl, who allegedly ran away with her Muslim boyfriend, yesterday caused a stir at a Katsina High Court when she disowned her parents.

Daily Post gathers during the court sitting January 11, Habiba dissociated herself from a suit allegedly filed on her behalf by Trustees of Stefanos Foundation and the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) over her conversion to Islam.

This was after her father, Ishaku Tanko and the representatives of ECWA and the foundation claimed that Habiba is underage. Habiba presented a letter to the Katsina High Court where she insisted that she is actually 18-year-old and not 14 years, as being alleged.

Bawa Yakubu, the counsel to the plaintiff urged the court to disregard the letter as it was written in Hausa language and should not be admitted as a document before the court.

In response, the defense counsel, Abu Umar, argued that since the letter translated in English language, it can stand as concrete document before the court.

”Even if she is a minor as argued by the defense, there is no law that prevents a minor from expressing his or her views according to the Nigerian Constitution,” Umar said.

Meanwhile, Justice Iliyasu-Wali, in his judgment, ruled that there would be need for Habiba to ultimately confirm or deny authorship of the letter.
He adjourned the matter till January 25 for hearing.
