SA President Jacob Zuma Urges all Parents to Read to their Children to Improve Literacy

To improve children’s literacy levels, South African President, Jacob Zuma has urged parents to spend more time with their children by reading to them.

”I call upon all parents who are able to do so‚ to read to their children and to also encourage them to read. Let us not allow television to take away the time of our children to read,” he said.

Zuma, 74, who is pleased with the progress the education sector has achieved so far in curbing illiteracy, also pleaded with parents on Tuesday, to monitor the time their children spend watching television, SA News reports.

He continued:

”Parents should control the time spent by children watching television so that it does not affect their school work. We must do more to improve learner outcomes in mathematics‚ physical science‚ accounting and languages.

More children must be encouraged to take these subjects‚ and more teachers must be trained to teach these subjects. The Basic Education Department is working on these matters.”

Zuma asked all stakeholders to help prevent learners from dropping out of school.

”Whether it is financial reasons, abuse of drugs or other social challenges, we need to tackle them together. We must keep our youth in school. We collectively call upon all sectors of society to play their meaningful role to keep our youth in school.”

President Zuma is a proud polygamist. Married six times in total, he currently has four wives and 21 children.
