How Touching! Deaf Couple Hear Each Other For The First Time, Thanks to High-Tech Hearing Aids

It is indeed a miracle for Neil and Helen Robinson who have been married for 12 years, and have both been deaf all their lives. But now, thanks to cochlear implants, they can talk and hear each other for the first time. They both come from Salisbury, Wiltshire, and are thought to be the first couple in the UK to have the implants fitted and are amazed they can finally hear each other.

Mirror reports that it was Helen’s persuasiveness that convinced her husband to go for the implants. They both underwent surgery at  at the Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital in Chandler’s Ford in November. The implants are designed in such a way that a part sits on the inside of the skull, and another on the outside. Both are connected with a magnet. The inner part sends pulses of electricity to the brain which then deciphers them into sounds. They are also the first people in the UK to have the implants, because of the location of the implants in their skull and the complexity of it, they will have to travel to Southampton for follow-up appointments.
