UPDATE: Why School Boys Accused of Raping Classmates May Get 14-Year Jail Sentence

The horrific news of secondary school students raping their female mates, is one that has left many outraged, read here. Punch reports that the arrested final year secondary school students of Ireti Grammar School, Falomo, Lagos State, may face charges bordering on physical assault and attempted rape. If they are found guilty, they may be sentenced to 14 years in prison, as some of the perpetrators are over 18.

Four of the accused students have been arrested, and have already given their statements to the police. Promises have however been made that in the forthcoming days, more arrests will be made, but the younger perpetrators will be given a different punishment.

The Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) of the Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Lagos State Deputy Governor is one body said to be following the case closely. Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the body’s coordinator had this to say.

“Agencies involved in the investigations would make their findings known. But we will continue to sensitize and engage communities, children and schools on sexual violence.”
