You Are Likely Going to Face the Law if you Assault or Maltreat Your Househelp

Onyinye Chuks, 34,  was taken before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s court in Lagos State yesterday for battering and assaulting her house-help. She is now currently facing a four-count charge of the said offence. Those who maltreat their househelps, the law is coming for you.

Prosecutor, Sergeant Raphael Donny, said that Onyinye’s reason was that the housemaid stole her money. So she beat her up and locked her inside her toilet. Vanguard reports that she fed the girl once and didn’t allow her to take a bath or change her clothes for those long days. One of the accused’s neighbors was said to have reported the issue to the police, after the anonymous individual could not sit back and watch the girl being tortured anymore. Following the report, the police visited the house and found the girl in the condition.

“Hence, the accused was arrested while the girl was taken to the hospital for treatment,” Donny said.

The offences, according to Donny went again Sections 171, 207, 245 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Onyinye pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against her. Davies Abegunde, Chief Magistrate, set the bail at N1 million with two sureties in like sum. Abegunde ordered the accused to pay N200,000 into the Court Registrar’s account as part of the bail conditions and adjourned the case until June 21 for a hearing.
