Signs That Your Child Is Gifted (Part 1)

Have you seen the movie, Limitless? Or Lucy? They’re movies about drugs that enhance the brain to genius level. Now when I heard about Heidi Hankies, the 4 year old who scored 159 on her IQ test, I thought she must have been on one of those drugs. Mind you, the great brainiac, Albert Einstein scored 160 on his IQ test. A little research showed that two other teenaged kids had actually beaten Einstein’s score.
But see, Heidi’s parents had noticed some uncommon behaviour in their child before they decided to take her for an IQ test. Are you sure your child isn’t also a gifted child like Heidi and those other kids? How would you know? Let’s download these tell-tale signs that show you’ve got a genius living under your roof.

Quick Brains
These kids are quick to understand how stuff works. They’re the type to surprise you by navigating to the Candy Crush game on your locked phone. You didn’t know she was watching and learning the other time you put the game on for her, to keep her busy while you indulged yourself.
Playthings are not the only things they’re quick to learn; they also learn how to talk and read earlier than most of their mates. Just teach them once and they’ll be able to carry on from there. Some experts believe that it’s because these kids were born with a denser network of dendrites in their brains so they are able to quickly form connections based on what they experience.

Curiosity Discovered The Cat
Curiosity is second nature to these kids so it’s common to see them always wanting to know. They want to physically interact with their world so that they can learn and be familiar with it. If there’s anything they don’t understand, there’ll be questions that must be answered. Giving them some flippant answer to put them off will only make matters worse; these kids have strong cognitive abilities and if your answer doesn’t add up, they’ll be bombarding you with a blizzard of questions.

Close Your Eyes And Imagine
You can frequently spot these kids staring into space. They have been transported into a world that’s far from the reality we live in. In that world, the sky may be green and coco-pops is the cure for cancer…but coco-pops is scarce.

Yes. Gifted kids have very vivid imaginations and you’ll be surprised at the detailed explanations of the world they have imagined. These imaginations are what fuel their creativity and creativity is the DNA of genius. Imagination also helps them get a firm grasp on what they’re learning or experiencing and also to get insights in/on the subject/object of focus. So the next time you notice a long pause after your answer to a question, know that they are visualising your reply, looking at it from different perspectives. And it’s all with their powerful ability to imagine, put images to things that cannot be perceived with the five senses.

Watch Us Focus
Attention span is defined as a person’s ability to stay focused on one thing for a length of time without being distracted. According to Wikipedia, some people believe that the average person has an attention span of 8 seconds while others believe that a healthy teenager or adult has about 20 minutes. Now I you notice that your kid usually gets engrossed on one thing for an extended period of time, s/he is showing signs of high intelligence.
Although older kids can focus for a longer time, gifted kids do it wayyy more than their peers and in some cases, than their elders. I mean, how would you explain 19 year old Moshe Cavalin who, at the age of 15 already had 3 degrees. He explained in his book, We Can Do, published when he was 14, that it was all focus. The cheeky teenager said it had nothing to do with genius. Talk about modesty, eh?
