Mark Wealth

Health is wealth, they say and so like wealth, we should take good care of it, never taking our foot of the pedal. Looking at it from another angle, the human body is not like wine that gets better being passive with the passage of time. For a woman who has to endure childbirth and nurturing, taking care of the home, work/career and in their 30s, 40s or 50s, extra effort has to be taken to maintain and preserve good health.

In order to maintain good health, you have to keep an eye and a finger on the different parts of your body that could suffer debilitation through diseases, aging and our lifestyles.

  • All tests listed above.
  • Eye Tests

Age and lifestyle affects the eyes. The muscles grow weak with age while computer and mobile phone use compounds the issue. Regular visits to the optometrists will do your vision some good. Conditions like macula degeneration are common at this age so tests should be carried out every two to three years.

  • Blood Sugar Test

Boy, haven’t we kept our sweet-mouths busy through the years. As we age, the pancreas gets weak and cannot break all that harmful sugar down to manageable forms. As a result, the level of sugar in the blood increases leading to life threatening diabetes.

Women this age should not joke with running a check on their blood sugar levels. These tests are called Fasting blood sugar test. Once every three years should be ideal except a result shows the need to run tests more frequently.

  • Immunisation Boosts

Yes, remember those immunisation shots you took when you were younger? All those Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pneumonia, Small pox and Whooping cough (Pertussis) shots? Well, you will be doing well to take boost shots at this age.

  • Weight Watch

We all know that obesity is a problem. At this age, adults start to gain weight, about a pound every year. Over weight contributes to high blood pressure, diabetes and some stress on the heart. Get a home scale and/or go measure and talk about your weight with the doc.

  • All the health checks listed above. Yes including tests for STDs.
  • Dental Checks

Your teeth have been working since you grew them. Working morning, noon and night. Taking all those sugary substances that cause wear and tear to the teeth and gum. Regular visits to the dentist should help you keep tabs on plaque, cavities and gum problems.

  • Waist Circumference

This is caused by age and it’s effect on hormone release. This causes the redistribution  of fat in women this age to their lower abdomen, butts and hips. They are at a risk of diabetes, cancer, heart diseases and metabolic syndrome.

I know they seem like a lot, right? They are important though. You’ve got to set a day apart, make an appointment or better yet, some appointments with different doctors so that you can cover most if not all these checks. Family doctors may have their hands full if they have to check more than one patient in a day so they may skip some of the tests.
