Dear MIMsters: Evil Thrives When We Do Nothing About It

Dear Mimsters, I just thought I should share an experience I had today and also remind us that evil thrives when people are complicit.

I boarded a taxi this morning to work alongside 4 other passengers. I sat in front with another young girl who was to alight at the next bus stop from where we boarded. To my amazement, the driver said he wasn’t going to stop at the bus stop and the lady was like “why?” The driver just bluntly refused to stop without a reason.

This got my attention and I asked the driver why. He didn’t say he wouldn’t stop there before everyone boarded. This driver seriously drove past the bus stop and the girl started screaming trying to call the attention of passersby but everyone else in the taxi didn’t blink an eye lid. They were obviously all minding their business and this pained me.

An old lady at the back even told me to stop talking (because I blasted the driver well) so that the driver will concentrate and take us to our destinations safely. I had to tell her “Madam, I’m disappointed that at your age to keep quiet and watch evil being done before your very eyes and you keep mute.

“You are concerned about getting to your destination safely but this wicked man has carried another passenger who is young enough to be your grand-daughter to an unknown destination but you don’t care because she isn’t your child”.

How on earth can someone be quiet and watch something go wrong and someone get hurt. Is “minding my business”the best approach to life? A young girl of 15 is leading a bad life, yet never did you for one day deem it fit to talk to her as a mother or as a more experienced person to show her how bleak her future looks if she continues like. Yet, you don’t waste a minute to talk about her with another person or use her as an bad example to your children but you forget that she will live and grow in the same society with your precious children.

Someone is getting harassed or even raped by the road side but you pass and close your ears to her cry and even look at them like you are watching a movie after all it’s not your business when you would have called for help but you forget that the victim could be your sister.

God is not mocked. You’ll surely reap a hundredfold of every seed sown. If you keep quiet while injustice is done, please sit down and relax while you wait for your own share of it and please don’t bother God or cry because everyone will also be minding their own business.

  • Kudos dear poster. I always talk when I see injustice in whatever form. I don’t care what people think of me.
