Public Display of Affection (PDA) | Is it Really Appropriate?

Affection mean a gentle feeling of fondness or likeness. It could be expressed also in different way by different people; it could be a smile, a peck, a hug or a kiss.

Have you ever witnessed a couple who couldn’t keep their hands off each other in public? Even though public displays of affection have become fairly common, there’s a line some people cross, taking it to the place of being inappropriate.

Public display of affection or PDA as it is called, is the act of two people indulging in an intimate act in public. It could be a couple kissing or two girls holding hands, pretty much anything that displays affection between two people.

Falling in love is wonderful, and when it happens, you want the world to know. However, being too affectionate in public shows a lack of general etiquette skills. When you and your main squeeze make out in front of other people, they are likely to feel extremely uncomfortable.

Majority of people do it to show off generally , you can never tell if it is genuinely an act of love.

In Nigeria,we have noticed that couples barely show Public display of affection even in front of other family members on their wedding day . It could be due to the fact that people could be quite conservative or shy about flaunting their partner to the world, in other words, a ‘behind closed doors affection’ is much more appreciated in Nigeria.

PDA is quite obscene to some people in the our society. Nigeria is a conservative country and anything new that creeps up is bound to startle our systems. In an age and time like today’s, where we deal with brand consciousness, latest gadgets, instant software updates, and facebook statuses and life at the speed of tweets, we still haven’t gotten over that African code of conduct.

Bringing your boyfriend or girlfriend home is a still taboo for so many even if it is just hanging out! .

Whether it is good or bad cannot be ascertained, and because we haven’t fully accepted it in our society doesn’t mean it is bad.

Moderation is the key.

Some people touch one another inappropriately in public. Being overly affectionate in is not in good taste and will not be allowed in a typical Nigerian setting. Therefore, good taste and respect for others is the guideline for appropriate behavior.

Once couples begin to respect others in the society, they will take it easy on the PDA.
Watching others kiss and do all sorts, angers some people greatly.
Yes we are in a liberal world and people have the right to do what they want to do but a little consideration will always go a long way.

Different strokes for different folks they say.

It is an individual thing.
