English Singer Paloma Faith Speaks on the Terrifying Side of Pregnancy & Childbirth

Paloma Faith announced at the end of August last year that she was expecting a baby with her partner Leyman Lahcine, a French artist– writing on her social media page:

“I am so delighted to tell you I am going to take a short while off to have a baby.

I have spent my whole life wanting to be a mother and now the time has come for me to do so. I feel so lucky. I am nervous and excited about being a mum and just need to be normal and low key for a while.”

Later, she announced that she’d welcomed her child on December 5, 2016, telling fans that she had had a difficult birth, requiring an emergency caesarean.

The birth of her child proved to be a terrifying ordeal for Paloma. The 36-year-old singer was left struggling to walk for two months after enduring a traumatic 20-hour labour before having an emergency Caesarean last year.

During a chat with DPA, the new mother says she is glad to have pregnancy behind her.

”There’s nothing glamorous in my opinion about pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. It’s hell basically.

Everything went wrong with the pregnancy and the labour, but it’s so worth it. Despite trying to avoid taking medicine during labour, I took some after like nine hours,” she said, laughing.

”Motherhood was the best thing I’ve ever done; but it’s also the worst,” she added.
Describing it as “strange’’ playing a double role of juggling motherhood with career, the pop star said she would release her fourth album — “The Architect,’’ on Nov. 17.

Speaking to Sun UK in October, Paloma shared more on her pregnancy and childbirth experience.

”I had this amazing birth plan that was set to be all natural and amazing and then just like, everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong.

I had 20 hours of labour, and a premature one, and then I wasn’t dilating. The baby was in jeopardy and so I had to have an emergency C-section.

But I did nine hours of labour without pain relief then just lost the plot completely. Because I’d been in labour for a long time I had something called PROM which is a premature rupture of waters.

Then I just had so much other stuff go wrong afterwards because I also had an infection of the womb and really bad mastitis.”

Paloma is planning to raise her child as gender-neutral. She has declined to share her baby’s name or sex since giving birth and has now said she will raise the toddler undefined by gender.

The singer had previously been married to taxidermist Rian Hayes but they divorced in 2005 after a year of marriage.
