‘How I Saved My Mum From Armed Robbers at Age 10’- Read Temitope Akunnusi’s Story of Bravery

The underlying foundation of any act of heroism is love. This story is a testament to the love a 10-year-old boy had for his mum.

A graphics designer, Temitope V. Akinnusi took to Facebook to share a vivid story about how he lost his left eye while saving his mum from armed robbers, when he was only 10 years old.

His dad had gone on a trip and on that fateful night, armed robbers broke into their home. They wanted to violate his mum because they didn’t get the money they expected but Temitope could not let that happen. And even though he knew there was no chance for a boy his age to fight 5 armed robbers, he took a chance and it paid off. He exhibited a special kind of bravery beyond his years. His love knew no fear.

But he lost something of value. He lost his left eye fighting for his mother’s dignity.

Read what he wrote;

“It was around 11pm when we heard a noise downstairs, the bangs on the door and gun shots. Everywhere became still as a lull knowing fully that the armed robbers were already downstairs. Mum, myself and my little sister were the only family occupying the upstairs. I was 10, my little sister was 8. Dad has traveled.
The little money we had on us is the one we were going to survive on for a week. Mum was already trembling as we heard foot steps on the stair case, I asked “Mum, what’s happening?” She replied “Nothing, just keep quiet and hide under bed”. I refused. Immediately we heard a heavy knock on the door.. “Open this door, or we blow it open”. Mum went to the door and opened it slightly. She was pushed and she landed on the cemented floor causing bruises on her left arm and knees. A five fiercely looking men with weapons banged in. Mum screamed, and they threatened to shoot if she screams again.

“Where is your husband?”…. “He is not around sir, He traveled outside the state”. Mum explained with a very shaky and trembling voice with tears rolling down her cheek. I bursted into tears too. The man with a dark shade slapped me and I fell to the ground. My little sister screamed and she was held and her lips were sealed.

“Madam, go inside and bring money” ..
Please sir, My husband has traveled and he won’t be coming back until next week, the little money he gave to us was to be survived on by myself and my two kids. Mum explained.

“Madam, don’t tell us stories.. Go inside and bring out money for us” Mum rushed in as one of the gang followed her.

She came back.
.
“Madam, what is this? 8,000 Naira? Do you think we are hungry?” Are you telling me this is the only money you have in this house? You better go inside and bring all the money before we search this apartment ourselves”.

Sir, I’m not lying. That’s the only money we are having. Mum replied.

It seems you want to loose these your kids? A gun was pointed at my lil sister’s forehead. Mum screamed and a heavy slap landed on her face.
“Madam, don’t waste our time, go inside and bring out the remaining money, we will kill your kids in your presence right now if you stress us”.

After much arguments. The gang leader said “Do you want me to spoil you for your husband?” Lie down here!
This man moved closer to Mum, and already trying to pull his trousers as Mum was pinned to the ground by the other 4 men. Mum was about to be raped!

As a 10 year old boy, I stood up from where I was lying down after the slap and moved towards their direction. They were shocked as I grabbed the edge of the gun one of the gang was holding. As a little boy with a little strength, the man overpowered me and hit me in the face with the sharp edge of the gun. I fell to the ground with blood gushing out of my face. I screamed and disturbed them just to stop them from sleeping with my Mum. I couldn’t see clearly as I moved towards them again, My eyes were already filled with blood. They threatened to shoot me if I come closer again, I didn’t listen. Yes, I want to die! I will rather die than you sleeping with my Mum.

Luckily, The police were already around. Mum wasn’t raped as they heard that the police were around, they fleed and escaped. The police rushed me to the hospital in their van, I was treated. But it was too late, I had a very deep cut in my left eye. My left eye has gone!
