7 Reasons You May Be Experiencing Pain During Intercourse

Eyinade Eweje

Some women experience pain or discomfort in the vaginal, pelvic or labial areas during or immediately after intercourse. This may lead to a sort of phobia and subsequently create problems in their sexual relationship with their spouse. Instead of bearing the pain and resorting to a sexless existence, find solution now.

Find common reasons that may be responsible…

1. Insufficient lubrication. Some women experience a drop in their oestrogen levels after childbirth or during breastfeeding; this may contribute to vaginal dryness. Insufficient foreplay, as well as some medications including sedatives, some birth control pills, antidepressants and high blood pressure medications may also be responsible.

2. Infection or injury. Sexually transmitted diseases, yeast infections or skin problems such as eczema in the genital area can cause painful sex. Urinary tract infections may also be responsible.

Injury or irritation caused by an episiotomy, scarring from pelvic surgery and female circumcision are also common culprits, so, get your doctor’s evaluation.

3. Some medical conditions including uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, haemorrhoids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, irritable bowel syndrome and uterine prolapse may also be culprits. Get your doctor’s evaluation to be sure.

4. Congenital abnormality. Some women have vaginal birth defects. See your doctor to rule out this underlying cause.

Involuntary spasms of the muscles of the vaginal wall called vaginismus may also be responsible as it makes penetration painful.

5. Sexual abuse. If you were sexually abused as a child or raped as an adult, the psychological trauma may be responsible. Seeking counselling may help.

6. Intercourse too soon after childbirth. It is usually advised that couples wait for at least six weeks after childbirth before having sex. If vaginal dryness is experienced after this period, see if using a water-based lubricant helps.

7. Menopause. Pain resulting from vaginal dryness may be as a result of menopause if you are between age 45 – 55 as the vaginal lining may lose their usual moisture and become dry during this period.

Your doctor may prescribe oestrogen creams or other appropriate medications to offer some relief.
