Smoothies: One Fun Way To Get Kids To Eat Veggies And Fruits

The big question is, “how do you get your kids to eat more fruits and veggies?”

Fruits are available with 2 to 3 or more fruits in season throughout the year. I love fruits but with most of my working hours at work, I find that they frequently go bad in the fridge.

We started to chop up fruits as they reach that soft and mushy stage (especially the pawpaw and banana), bag them and put in the freezer.  This made it easy to chop fruits and make the most delicious smoothies.  My 6 year old son is loving it and asking for more.

I was also able to take my older children off the routine milk and cereal for up to 2 days a week and replace breakfast with a wholesome smoothie.

You’ll need a very good smoothie maker – not too expensive, I got one from a local dealer at a great price.

My kids’ favourite is the Strawberry Smoothie. To make it, you’ll need:

  • 6 fingers of banana
  • One small pineapple
  • Pawpaw (adds bulk to your smoothie)
  • Watermelon (helps to liquefy)
  • Carrot (to sweeten)
  • Strawberries
  • Milk or Yoghurt
  • Ice

Simply wash and clean all fruits, then cut into size-able chunks. Put chunks of fruits into the smoothie maker and add some milk or natural yoghurt. Blend to desired texture.
You could also add oranges and fresh ginger (great when those coughs and colds are threatening).

Can’t wait till mango season is here.  My next stop will be ‘agbalumo’ (cherries) smoothie.
Substitute fizzy drinks with wholesome blasts of fresh, tasty and highly nutritious fruits!
