Touching Story of Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams’ Battle With Depression Casts a Spotlight on Mental Health

Destiny’s Child singer, Michelle Williams, says she has “sought help” for the good of her mental health.

According to reports, the 37-year-old has voluntarily checked herself into a California mental health facility to seek help for her struggle with depression.

US celebrity gossip website, TMZ reports that the singer, who famously reunited with her former girl group Beyonce and Kelly Rowland at Coachella in April, is being treated in a facility just outside of Los Angeles and has been there for the past several days.

Williams, who has been open about her mental health struggles spoke about it in the past. She spoke to The Talk last year, about being depressed over the years and admitted feeling ‘suicidal’.

”I’ve been suffering [from depression] since between the age of 13 and 15… at that age I didn’t know what to call it.”

Michelle had revealed to Rolling Out in 2013:

“For years growing up, I thought someone getting treatment and counseling was really crazy or had personality disorders, but it’s really for normal people that have some issues that they need answers to.”

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Michelle said that as a mental health awareness advocate, she “listened to the same advice” she’s given to others.

”For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your well-being.

Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I  advocate for the betterment of those in need.”

”For years, I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time suffering with depression,” Michelle Williams said in an interview on US TV in October 2017.

”It got really, really bad, to the point of being suicidal. I was at that place where it got so dark and heavy because sometimes you feel like ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people, I’m not supposed to be feeling this way – what do I do?. I wanted out.”

Rapper, Missy Elliott responded to the news on Twitter, saying:

“I want to lift our sis up in prayer because there are so many people battling this and many trying to deal with it alone. Let’s keep the ones who are openly dealing with it uplifted and be encouraging to them”.

Michelle got engaged to a pastor and life coach, Chad Johnson, 40, in March.
