Dear MIMsters: Looking At The Man I Married, No One Truly Knows Tomorrow| Part 2

Continued from here

The venue of the reunion was a 5 star hotel. I heard it was truly Rekia’s idea that the reunion hold at such a luxury place. And as could be expected of students who finished secondary school less than 2 decades ago; some of whom do not even have steady jobs yet, only a few of them turned up.

I mean, how do you turn up for a reunion where the minimum financial commitment of each student was around 50k? I did not have to pay though because Rekia had ensured to tell everyone present that I was her guest. Anyways, most of them could not even remember me; recall that I spent only one session in IGS. And Rekia did not let the opportunity to remind them of my identity slide. She said, “So you guys don’t remember Bunmi?

The mother Theresa that graced (sarcastically said this) IGS when we were in JSS 2? Bayo’s admirer?” She was laughing hard by this time.

I found out that even after many years, Rekia’s hold on our class mates is still strong.

As the ‘party’ progressed, the ushers placed a bottle of red wine on each table to which Rekia was quick to tell them we didn’t request for but they said it’s been paid for. Paid for? By whom?

They said the drinks were paid for by a friend of the house. Which friend? Of which house? Rekia insisted we would not accept the drinks if the ‘friend of the house’ did not show his or her face. After going back and forth for a long time, the ‘friend’ showed his face. Who did we see? Lo and behold, it was Bayo Olopade! Looking all clean and cute!

All mouths were left hanging.

Though his face hadn’t changed, he had grown taller and he was looking very handsome. Abeg! Money is good.

He walked majestically towards us, and shook hands with everyone present. He then joined us at the table. The first thing I noticed was that a young man was holding his phones, he beckoned to him to drop them on the table and he asked the guy to leave him with us.

Trust my friend, she was all over him in no time. She asked all the questions we all obviously wanted to ask but Bayo wouldn’t answer us. He kept looking at me and smiling. He asked after my mom and brother, and I was glad he did.

My people, we were in for more shocks!

As people drove into the hotel premises, most of them would come towards Bayo and greet him cordially. It was through a remark made by one of such people that we knew Bayo co-owned the hotel.

Hahaha… Life!

Like I said, try as much as Rekia and the others did, Bayo did not answer their questions. After a while, he excused himself and a few minutes later, the man who held his phones earlier and whom I would later find out was his PA, came to take me to him just as more ushers brought more refreshments for the others, still on Bayo’s bill.

Bayo and I went on a date two days after, and unlike the others, he told me how his story changed.

After he was sent away from IGS, his father registered him in another public school and that was where he met Wale, the guy with whom he co-owned the hotel. Wale took a liking to Bayo and introduced him to his father. According to Bayo, Wale’s father soon got a political appointment and as he rose in his new status, Wale ensured his father carried Bayo along with them. It turned out that Wale was Bayo’s covenant partner. They finished secondary school and proceeded outside the country for their university education. He told me they had then recently returned to Nigeria to start few businesses of their own among which was the hotel.

And just like me, Bayo’s previous relationships did not work out so…

Long story cut short, we have been married for 7-years now, and it’s been blissful all the way. I am glad I sowed seeds of kindness to Bayo in those days. He practically worships the ground I walk on and I love him so much. We have three beautiful children now and he flies us all around the world. He had set my brother up in business and bought a big house for my mom.

Now, I do not mean to gloat but Rekia’s wedding hit the rocks. Her abroad-based husband left her for a white woman and she almost killed herself because the guy was the one responsible for her exorbitant lifestyle and when she couldn’t keep up again, she felt life wasn’t worth living anymore. I spoke with my husband on her behalf and he rose to the occasion and gave her some money to start a business for herself.

Believe me, every time I remember the first day I set my eyes on Bayo, I can’t but acknowledge that truly, no one knows tomorrow.

Thank you for reading.
