Twitter User, @tillytate20, Says She Fakes Being Married To Survive Patriarchy

There is an unmistakable rise in the clamour for equal opportunities for women by Nigerian feminists in recent times. Although most of their agitations have turned out for many Nigerians to be a sort of culture-shock; still these subjects must be broached.  Another Nigerian feminist, @tillytate20, has taken to Twitter to describe the struggle that single women who need to rent an apartment in Lagos face, and she blames it on patriarchy.

It is not the first time we are hearing of single women been turned down by house-owners for the sole reason that they are unmarried, while nobody questions single men about their marital status before they are allowed rent.

The tech enthusiast who describes herself as an ‘enemy of stupidity said in one of her tweets that she is able to convince house-owners to rent their apartments to her by lying that she is a married woman whose husband is abroad.

She said in another tweet that she learned the trick after many failed attempts to get accommodation as a single woman, and that she now gets better apartments and is accorded more respect as a fake married woman.

She tweeted:

“I’ve lived in 3 different apartments in the last 6years,

and i have learnt that it’s easier to tell the landlord/landlady that I’m married and my husband is abroad.

I get better apartments, less problems and more respect from my landlord as a fake married woman. It’s tiring!!”

A male twitter user, @OnuigweC, tried to make a case for the landlords, arguing that patriarchy was not the reason that they did not rent out apartments to single women.

He argued that the landlords also have an aversion to renting their apartments to men who are internet fraudsters popularly known as ‘Yahoo boys”, but @tillytate20 wondered how a single woman and a criminal were subjected to same form of social stratification.

She wrote in response:

How is not renting to someone because they are single the same thing as not renting to someone because they are criminals? How???????

In another tweet, she wrote;

“No, it’s not. No yahoo boy is rejected from renting a house because he is unmarried.

And my neighbours who are single men parade ladies everyday and the landlord doesn’t bat an eye but he won’t rent to a single girl because he believes unmarried women are promiscuous It’s wrong.”
