Should A Mother Be Jailed For Doing This?

A Florida mum, Heather Hironimus, arrested for a resisting a court order to have her 4-year-old son, Chase, circumcised has reluctantly agreed to the procedure after spending a week behind bars. In tears, she signed paperwork giving approval for the surgery in court, bringing her yearlong legal battle with her ex-husband to an end.

Heather who split up from Chase’s dad, Dennis Nebus, in 2012, had signed a parenting agreement with him, saying he could schedule a circumcision, but later changed her mind.

A Florida court initially ordered the circumcision in May 2014, when Chase was 3. Hironimus was however able to get an emergency order that delayed the procedure. She was finally ordered to go through with it in March, 2015.

Hironimus refused to comply and instead absconded with her son. She was later arrested.

Her yearlong legal battle with her ex-husband was supported by anti-circumcision advocates who donated thousands and started an “awareness campaign” called Saving Chase.

Jeffrey Gillen, the judge who issued the May 2014 ruling, based his decision on testimony from a pediatric urologist that circumcision lowers the risk of penile cancer and AIDS.

Gillen said: “You are both going to continue to be the parents to this young man. You’re going to have to learn how to deal with that in an amicable, friendly, civil manner. You’re going to have to always take into consideration what’s in your child’s best interest. To the extent that you may differ on things, you’re going to have to talk them out. That’s what parents do in a civilized society. You do not take the law into your own hands.”

Attorneys for both Hironimus and the boy’s father, Dennis Nebus, declined to comment, citing an ongoing gag order in the case.
