An 11-year-old girl in Paraguay gave birth to her stepfather’s child after he raped her at 10. The poor girl, who delivered a baby girl via caesarean section yesterday, was refused an abortion despite being a rape victim because of Paraguay’s strict anti-abortion laws.
The stepfather has since been arrested, and is awaiting trial while her mother was charged with negligence.
Paraguay’s refusal to allow the abortion despite the circumstance surrounding the pregnancy drew criticisms from many groups, including U.N. human rights officials.
The country bans abortion except when the mother’s life is in danger, and local health officials said it was not.
