DEAR MIM READERS: Was My Employer Right to Have Sacked Me For Claiming I Was Pregnant When I Wasn’t?

I have been married for over 10 years without a child and in all of the trauma that brings, I served the company diligently and rose to head a department.

Every one in the office knew my plight (I’ve never been pregnant for a day), but the typical me always had a smile for everyone notwithstanding.

However, about 3 months after returning from a long vacation abroad with my husband this year, I became so depressed. After series of fertility treatments including IVF in Nigeria, we had seen a renowned fertility expert based on referrals, still, it didn’t appear there was any hope in sight.

I was fast becoming a shadow of myself and people were beginning to notice. My husband and mother asked so often, “Where is your faith?” So, one day, after reading a book my husband gave me, I resolved not to give in to depression. I subsequently picked myself up and beefed up my faith by announcing to everyone, including those at the office, that I was pregnant. The news went viral. It boosted my faith and I was gradually becoming alive again.

To my utter shock, I got a brief by the company’s HR about a week later that I should submit a doctor’s report to support my claim. I told them to wait for me to get one from my doctor abroad to put them off but they kept pushing. Soon after, I was transferred to another department headed by a junior colleague. The company claimed this was to reduce my workload in view of my pregnant state.

That explanation didn’t make an iota of sense to me, so, I immediately protested and told them I was only pregnant by faith. I was subsequently sacked for telling a lie. Can you imagine?

The company did me such great injustice after several years of service and I have resolved to employ all available media to make them pay for it. The case in currently in court.

I mean, who does that? Was I wrong to have professed my fondest wish by faith to the company?

  • i can remember reading this same kinda story on mim….well u should have left ur work place out of ur faith stuff…

  • You should have professed it to yourself madam and to family and friends and not your work place. I personally blame you for that. It is wrong to sack you, they should have just queried you.

  • That company is your enemy as far as am concern. They ought to be happy you are pregnant after many years. Who cares if you were lying or not? It dint go down well with them that’s why they demoted you. Fight and claim all your entitlement but please don’t go back there maybe they are even responsible for your childlessness. Who knows the covenant the CEO has with the devil over his employee?

  • Sorry to this, it’s not every one in your offline that share the same faith with you so you shouldn’t have inform them. Your company too went too far by sacking you. I hope you win the case and above all, may God visit your womb with miracle babies as you want.

  • Hmmmm you never know your enemies madam. Thank God this happened and now you will know the God you ar serving.receive ur children but pls don’t go work there again.

  • Is lying one of the company’s criteria for a sack? For me,they had in mind to sack you n were just waiting for an excuse.Ordinarily,u should have been issued a query not a sack

  • I am sure that I have read this story before and like before I don’t know who is right n who is wrong

  • Even if you were pregnant will u be announcing it to the world? If you are pregnant it just a matter of time it will speak for itself. You really acted immature that was not faith.

  • Madam i like ur faith, but u made a mistake by annoucing it 2 all, it’s an office not ur church even in d church u dn-t do that. It should have be done to ur close pal, pple dt believes in ur faith. Am sure God has exposed ur enemies soon u shall celebrate

  • They can never fit in your shoes so they won’t understand. Purse the case in court and fight for injustice.

  • You can prove your case in a court of law …you shouldn’t have been fired but what does your bylaws say

  • I love your faith work, I am not going blame you for anything. You did well by professing your faith. Hold on God and don’t give up. Remember the weapon of your warfare are not canal but might through God to…….. …. Concerning your company forget them and focus on what is about to do, they are distractions, don’t give in OK.
