WATCH: Al Jazeera’s ‘Africa Investigates’ Reveals How Babies Are Sold in Exchange For Whopping Sums in Nigeria

Al Jazeera’s ‘Africa Investigates’ series had journalists, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Rosemary Nwaebuni, go undercover to expose a category of people alarmingly thriving in Nigeria which they’ve tagged, ‘Nigeria baby farmers’. This category, including hospitals, fertility clinics and orphanages, illegally cater to the needs of couples desperate for a baby in exchange for whopping sums of money.

The journalists, armed with hidden cameras, posed as a couple who have been trying to have children for 12 years and are now being pressured to get a divorce by his parents. They visited private clinics and orphanages to find out how easy it is to buy a child illegally. Sadly, they were offered a baby at Destiny’s Child orphanage in Ulakwo by one Ada Ezeoyi, for $4,000 and $5000 for a female and male child respectively.

They are also offered a baby by Basic Clinic and Maternity Home in Imo State, owned by one Doctor Ohaeri and a similar figure was requested for.

They also exposed unethical medical practise by one Akinbode Damilola, a so-called miracle doctor who operates from a pharmacy in Delta State offering bogus fertility treatments.

Anas says, “We were not able to care for a stranger’s child ourselves, so we backed out of the deal. Our investigation has shone a light on parts of a sinister network. It involves genuine doctors and cynical staff in orphanages, who will sell vulnerable children to the highest payer. We have passed our evidence on to the authorities so that justice can prevail.”
