Background

My name is Aituaje Iruobe and I am known as WAJE . I was born in Akure, Ondo State and raised in Benin, Edo State. My dad hails from Edo State while my mum is from Onitsha, Anambra State. I attended Word of Faith Group of Schools, where I started my music career as a choir member. While I was a student at the school owned by the late Bishop Benson Idahosa, I was awarded a scholarship because of my singing prowess. I have always loved singing and my dad used to beat me a lot, because I used screwdrivers to drill holes in the walls of our house and imagined they were microphones. I graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where I studied for a degree in Social Work.

Music

I started singing professionally in 2007 when I featured on the remix of P- Square’s hit single, Omoge Mi. Prior to this, I was signed on with a label called Dome. In 2008, I participated in the Zain/MTV Africa’s Advance Warning competition and made it to the top three. I have won so many awards during the course of my music career. I have an album to my credit and currently, working on a new album.

Challenges

Being a star has put me under pressure. People expect me to live my life in a certain way but I try not to let it get to me because I want to remain myself. There are times you adhere to their expectations but there are certain people in your life that caution you. Because I am old enough to know the sort of anxiety I should not put myself through, I take things in my stride.

Training

I have regular rehearsals and eat healthy to live longer. These habits also really helps my voice grow stronger.

Motherhood

I drew strength from my mum when I got pregnant. She was there for me and did everything expected of a mother. She was very supportive at the time and she is still supportive of my daughter and all that I do.

As a mother, I have learnt to teach my daughter good values. I always pray that these values prove useful when the time comes. I am a friend and a mother to her. It does not look like my daughter will become a musician. She is more of a dancer and a lover of fashion; she loves dressing up.

Relationship with God

I have a deep understanding of the word of God and I also have a personal relationship with Him. I always want to be able to go to church and fall on the floor and worship God without anyone looking at me as ‘Waje the celebrity’. Above all, I just love to worship God.

Marriage

See Also

I don’t think there is any woman who is not looking for a good man to marry or call her own. My definition of a good man may not be the same as yours. Either way I am waiting for the right man. When the wedding bell tolls for me, it will not be a secret.

Fitness

I am still working on my weight but I am keen on adopting a healthy lifestyle. As you grow older, the emphasis is on living well and making healthy choices. I am fortunate to have met people who look younger than their age because they made a conscious effort to stay young-looking. I eat right and stay away from fizzy drinks. I want a healthy lifestyle that I can sustain.

Skin bleaching

I love my skin tone. Growing up, my mum enjoyed teasing me by saying I have ‘butter on my skin’ and I enjoyed it. I think I have a great skin so all I do now is ensure that I use a proper sunscreen cream to maintain my skin tone.

I don’t have anything against body enhancement surgeries. If I can afford it, I may alter some parts of my body.

Style

I dress according to my mood but my style is vibrant and chic. Whenever I feel like a tomboy, you can almost tell by the way I will dress.
