To me, it has spiritual implications. The stones may mean hardship like sickness, barreness etc while the money mean wealth but of what use is wealth in barreness, sickness or in sorrow? The good news for such couple is Jesus is the way out of all oppresssion of the wicked ones.

I think people should be stating it categorically in the wedding invites that no gifts will be accepted. It’s always an opportunity for bad people to get the couple.
