Man Accuses Lagos Police Of Causing Death Of 6-Weeks Pregnant Wife

A distraught man, Mr Solomon Wilfred, has claimed that his wife, Vivienne, who was locked up when she was 6-weeks pregnant, died from ’emotional stress’ after her release from the Lagos state police custody.

According to The Nation, the police has however denied the allegation saying ‘she was released immediately her husband said she was pregnant and has health challenges.

Vivienne had been arrested on March 15 and taken to Akinpelu Police station following an argument with another woman named Chinemerem Udomadu over a missing teenage girl, Perpetual Ucheweaku, whom Mrs Udomadu claimed to be her daughter, Osinachi Udomadu, who went missing since 2014.

Vivienne had disputed her claim, revealing she knew Perpetual’s parents and she had been under her guidance since she was about 8-years-old.

The case was taken to Akinpelu police station where  the DPO was said to have transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti, Yaba because it was regarded as a criminal case which could not be handled at his station.

Wilfred said while his wife was detained in a cell, he wrote a statement, begging the police to release his wife while he replaces her in the cell due to her pregnant state. He claimed he also told the police that she ‘suffers stress induced seizures’ to no avail.

His wife, whom he married last December, subsequently died on March 16, following her release the previous day.

Reacting to the allegations, Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, said in a statement,
”She was never put in the cell and she was released by the ACP SCID immediately her husband said she was 6-weeks pregnant and has health challenges.
The ACP later called and told me that she has been informed the woman fainted at home and was rushed to the hospital where she passed on. The police did nothing wrong in the matter. The suspects, Chinwendu and Chinemerem Udomadu have been charged to court and the result of the DNA test is still being awaited.”
