6 Months Jail Term or 90k Fine For Lagos Street Hawkers & Patronizers

This morning, the 1st of July, 2016, Lagos state governor, Akinwumi Ambode was a guest on ‘Your-View’ talk show on TV Continental to discuss street hawkers and hawking.

During the interview, the governor announced that he is set to kick in motion the enforcement on the ban on street hawking in Lagos, stating that anyone caught hawking in the street of Lagos will be prosecuted.

He did not just stop there as he stated clearly that the prosecution also extends to those (customers) who patronise both the street and traffic hawkers.

Governor Ambode also said that under the laws, Lagos residents could be sent to jail for buying goods from street and traffic hawkers. Street/traffic buyers and sellers are now both liable to 6 months imprisonment or a fine of N90,000.

Last year, the governor directed the Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Other Special Offences to carry out full enforcement of the law restricting street hawking in the metropolis.

However, he expressed his concern about the resurgence of street trading in major areas of the state, noting that not only does street trading constitute an environmental nuisance, it also pose a security threat to citizens.

He then urged those interested in doing business to seek for space in the various modern markets redeveloped by the state government to enhance business activities.

  • I hope he’s got jobs somewhere for these boys, they’re only trying to make a living. Most of them will turn armed robbers now terrorizing innocent citizen.

  • Stopping street hawking without provision of alternative source of income for these people will only create more problems than the ban intended to stop

  • This ain’t nice at all… why do they create laws without first considering their implications? Mmstchwwww

  • The law should have been amended to allow trading in some areas while that of the highways should be totally banned, like the traffic law banning Okada in some areas and allowing them operate in some specific areas.

  • How soon they forget, I have nothing against the law I’m all for it. I remember during his campaign he was busy patronising these people, in fact I saw a picture of him today buying corn or Plantain from a roadside seller. When it suits them.iys okay otherwise it’s garbage.
